This program has grown to its current prominence because of its founder, Susan "Snow White" Bain. Sno, as she is fondly referred to, found her calling at an early age, widowed at 19 with five children to raise. the daughter of an alcoholic father, Sno found her own inner strength and ultimately her calling in life through giving to others. first as a singer both at local and out of state venues, Sno brought joy through song until throat surgery ended a promising career. after losing several children prematurely, one from a drunk driver, Sno turned her efforts to helping the homeless, people she welcomed as her "second family" and continues to do so today.
At the beginning, 40 years ago Sno welcomed the needy directly into her home and still has up to 35 clients today. These people, all with alcohol, drug or mental type problems were given food, shelter, and clothing with no questions asked. in return, they were offered training in various fields beginning first as set and lighting designers and builders. as Sno's second family grew, she sought additional housing by purchasing government trailers with the proceeds derived from the design company as well as those of her "own funds".
Ultimately, government regulations forced the closing of the building in which the design facility was housed. Sno then opened "exotic elegance", a theme party company catering to both corporate and individual party's. This company continued to offer training in design, lighting, and customer relations, etc., this company flourished for almost twenty years and graduated many of the people back into society and life on their own terms with pride and self-assurance. The company was prominent locally and won many design awards including 1st place in the winter boat parade on several occasions.
Several years ago, hurricane Wilma destroyed the design warehouse, its props and displaced forty-five people. Never losing hope herself, all efforts were focused on the thrift shop store facility which had been in operation for twelve years. donations from individuals as well as corporations, her clients were taught to deal with the public, face adversity and continue in their recovery. a strip mall location as well as selling at the local swap shop to continue to fund housing for the homeless.
In 2001, Sno opened her housing shelter in Pompano Beach Florida. able to accommodate up to 70 people, the shelter has been financed in part by both the proceeds of the thrift store as well as the theme party operation. never being able to recover from Wilma and the economy Sno was forced to close the shelter and thrift store.
Having lost both operations, Sno, once again started over. She opened PTL Cabinets(praise the lord), which is cabinet manufacturing training facility, with a small business association loan. the same principles in which she has always operated were applied here. In an ongoing training operation producing hi-end cabinets and furniture selling both to the "trade" as well as the public. Since 2014 our training program is housed at 4120nw 10rn avenue Oakland Park, Florida 33309, we rented a 46,000.00 square foot building. A total of 35 clients are housed in houses in Ft. Lauderdale.
In January 2019, we partnered with feeding south Florida and started a food pantry and have up to date 176 families 745 that come for food each month.
2021
We were forced to leave our current location due to financial difficulty, because of covid 19 our contractor clients, not being able to work in condominiums and houses has caused us great financial difficulty. but fortunately, we were able to get a loan from the SBA and now we are located at 1801 north Andrews Avenue pompano Florida 33069. We have a 5-year lease with an option for 5 more years, at this location, besides the cabinet manufacturing facility, we will have a thrift store. but we cannot have our food pantry because the space is not air conditioned.
2023
Our building has been sold, and we have been given notice that they are going to tear down this building, we must move by January of next year, we borrowed the money to move here and spent $275,000.00 putting in electric and dust collection system. this could be the end of starting over enterprises, inc.
